Locative Inversion and Aspect Markers le and zhe in Mandarin Chinese

چکیده
Bresnan (1994), based on data in English and Chicheŵa, proposes that the discourse function of locative inversion construction (LIC) is presentational focus, in which the referent of the NP ‘is introduced or reintroduced on the (part of the) scene referred to by the preposed locative’. Pan (1996) suggests that the discourse function of LIC in Chinese is the same. In this paper, I investigate two different aspect markers zhe and le in LIC and argue that the different aspect markers occurring in LIC affect the discourse functions of the structure in Chinese. Only with the durative resultative marker zhe does the structure express presentational focus. When the perfective aspect marker le appears, however, its function is to comment on the scene referred to by the locative (Du, 1999). Evidence for this claim is provided by demonstrating the contrast between LIC with the two different aspect markers. In so doing, I also support the claim that the two aspect markers are fundamentally different, which is against the proposal by Sybesma (1997) where they are both categorized as resultative.

The Distributions of the Aspect Markers Zhe and Le in the Chinese You-coda Constructions
According to Huang (1987), all Chinese existential sentences involve the string of “... (NP) ... V ... NP ... (XP) ...”. When the V position is occupied by the verb you, the XP is refered to as you-coda. It has been observed that although the aspect markers zhe and le may alternate in the locative inversion construction (LIC), the superficially identical V-le and V-zhe sequences cannot appear i...
متن کاملAuxiliary selection in Chinese*
This paper argues that the distribution of the two Chinese aspectual auxiliaries -Ie and -zhe in the locative inversion construction is determined by the semantics of the event, in particular the interaction of lexical aspect (telicity and stativity) and agentivity. The -le/-zhe alternation shows a gradient effect similar to the selection of perfective auxiliaries in Romance and Germanic (Sorac...
متن کاملA corpus - based study of interaction between Chinese perfective - le and situation types
Mandarin Chinese as an aspect language (Norman, 1988:163) has a rich inventory of aspect markers, including perfective -le, -guo and imperfective -zhe, zai. Of these -le is the most studied marker because of its mysterious behaviors. For example, is it necessary to differentiate between the perfective -le and the COS le? Does -le indicate completion or termination? Are there any constraints on ...

The study explores the difficulties of native English speakers in acquiring the Chinese word order, aiming to relate it to the markedness theories. According to the Differential Markedness Hypothesis (DMH), the degrees of learner difficulty in second language acquisition can be predicted according to the degrees of typological markedness between learners’ first language (L1) and their second la...
